Building a Poker Bankroll

With the boom of online poker many have the dream or aspiration to win big, become a professional, fire their boss and earn a living from online or real world poker.

To be realistic, as many can probably attest to this is not an easy goal to reach. Aside from being a very skillful player there are many other necessary qualities needed, and pitfalls that must be avoided.

Unless you are fortunate enought to have a large startup bankroll it can also take a very long time to build up a sizable bankroll grinding it out on the low level tables. With that said, there are some simple rules which can help protect your bankroll as you build it.

I am currently in the process of building my bankroll on the Micro NL cash tables (.01/.02 & .02/.04). Being a student my starup capital was very modest ($50). If you find yourself in a similar position here are some great tips to perserving and building your bankroll:

1. Never buy in for more then 5% of your bankroll on a single table event. (unless the smallest level is beyond this)

2. Never buy in for more then 2% of your bankroll on a Multi-table event.(unless the smallest level is beyond this)

3. If at a cash table, leave when you have doubled your original buy in.

4. Dont move up levels unless you have approximately 25-50 times the max buy in for that level, eg. .05/.10 tables have max buyin of $10 then requires a bankroll of $250 - $500.

5. If you play Sit N Go or Multi table tourneys then do not move up in level unless the buy in represents 5% or less of your stack.

6. If your roll drops below the level of 20 times the max buy in amount for cash tables, or more then 5% for SNG or 2% for MTT's then drop back down.

These are some quick any easy tips to help preserve your bankroll as you move up the levels.
